What Are Implant Retained Dentures And Who Are They For?

Simply put, implant-retained dentures are appliances that are held in place by a series of strategically placed dental implants. Rather than conventional dentures that sit on the gum line, implant-retained versions clip directly onto specially adapted implants.

While implant-retained dentures are still designed to be fully removable, they won’t shift when attached to dental implants, giving patients greater stability, functionality and peace of mind.

If you’re a long-term denture wearer and no longer like the unpredictability of troublesome appliances, or you have multiple missing or failing teeth and want a more permanent solution – one that doesn’t rely on tubes of denture adhesive – then, implant-retained dentures provide a halfway solution between more expensive fixed full arch restorations and traditional ‘false teeth’ dentures.

Implant-retained dentures are often referred to as ‘snap-on’ or ‘clip-on’ dentures and are designed to be taken out to clean and reattached when finished. Because they maintain optimal stability and therefore, greater functionality, patients don’t have to restrict their diets as they maybe would with conventional dentures where overly hard, chewy or crunchy foods often have to be avoided. Instead, they can enjoy eating their favourite foods without restriction.

Essentially, patients get the best of both worlds – the ability to remove their dentures when they see fit along with the reliable implant-retained, stability once in place.

The Implant-retained Process Explained

Here’s a better idea of the process…

• Clinical evaluation – Our team will give you a thorough examination of the mouth and jaw to see whether you’re eligible. After you’ve been given the green light to proceed, we will provide a custom treatment plan detailing when you will come in for surgery.
• The surgical procedure – During the procedure, our oral surgeon will place a small number of dental implants into your jawbone. Temporary restorations known as ‘healing dentures’ will then be fitted until the implants have had the chance to stabilise in the jaw. This normally takes 3-6 months.
• Wait time – During the interim period, you can continue as normal but care should be taken with your temporary restoration until the implants are ready.
• Impressions – Once your implants have fully stabilised in the jaw further impressions are taken for your permanent denture.
• Final fitting – Finally, when your permanent denture is ready, our team will remove the healing denture and ‘clip’ or ‘snap’ it onto your implants. The result is a lifelike restoration denture that you can count on.
